The Business Model Canvas

is a recent addition to the business planning arsenal and an incredibly useful tool which is used to focus your business on the most important features of business planning. The Canvas begins with selecting a customer segment(s) you intend to address and then addresses:

• what that selected demographic values;
• how you are going to deliver a product or service that resonates with that value;
• how you are going to maintain the relationship with the customer;
• where the revenue stream from that relationship is coming from and what it is expected to be;
• what levels of physical, human and financial resources are going to be needed to support the business;
• which activities performed by the business will support the business model;
• identification of the major partners in the business operations;
• the overall operation costs involved in delivering the product or service to the customer segment(s).

All on One Page

And the largest benefit of all is that the Canvas forces you to hone down your ideas so it all fits on one page.  This necessity for clarity and precision impels some deep thinking about your new construction business and all the critical components. This is the major reason for creating a business plan… to gain clarity about your business and how it is going to operate.  Unlike the 50-page-plus dinosaur business plan we used to produce and then shove in the desk drawer, the Business Model Canvas is meant to be a tool that you use all the time to guide decisions you will be making about your Company.
